About the workshop

Open Data Standards are important for libraries and other cultural institutions to ensure preservation and long-term access to digital information. The use of open standards ensures interoperability of data among diverse systems.

The library-centric initiatives, such as Open Archives Initiative [OAI], Digital Object Identifier [DOI], Dublin Core Metadata Initiative [DCMI], Open URL, MARC, etc., support open standards for metadata harvesting, copy cataloging and interoperability. Their importance also lie in retrospective conversion of bibliographic data, migration from one library software to another and developing federated search engines. In view of the importance of data standards, IGIDR library is conducting a four days workshop on Digital Objects and Metadata: Preservation, Harvesting and Migration, from Jan 17 - Jan 20, 2011.

Target Audience:

The workshop will be highly beneficial to LIS professionals and teachers and to those involved in developing and maintaining digital collections. The sessions will be handled by senior and experienced professionals and there will be sufficient hands-on sessions.

Resource Persons:

Experts working in the field will be drawn from DRTC, IGIDR and Verus Solutions (NewGenLib).

Registration Details:

Rs.1500/- per participant, which includes working lunch, tea and course material. Excludes travel and accommodation. The payment by Demand Draft, drawn in favour of IGIDR payable at, Mumbai may please be sent to the workshop coordinator on the address mentioned in the registration form. Last Date for registration is December 15, 2010.

A maximum of 20 participants will be enrolled for the workshop on first-cum-first served basis.

Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is an advanced research institute and deemed university established by Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is located in the beautiful hillocks of Goregaon (E) near the film City having the architecture of famous Ajanta and Ellora caves. Accommodation and Food:

Outstation participants who require accommodation, on twin sharing basis in the institute's guest house, need to pay additional Rs. 1250/-for five days stay.

Boarding facility (Dinner and Breakfast) can also be availed in the guest house on payment basis. Accommodation for the family members will not be available due to limited number of rooms.

Weather:

The weather in Mumbai during December will be pleasant with moderate temperature. However, the participants are suggested to carry light warm clothing.
