 Introduction:

Open Index Initiative is relatively a new concept conceived at IGIDR library with a basic objective to develop an exhaustive online database with index and abstract to articles, book reviews and conference papers published in  Indian Social Science Journals.

The inspiration for this initiative comes from RePEc. OII facilitates direct data entry, by the registered members, through an online interface.

The scope is now extended to identify resources available in Indian Social Science Libraries, index such resouces and provide a searchable online interface. to promote the Resouce Sharing Activities.

This initiative also attempts to identify experts in open source software and to facilitate training programs and worshops for library professionals working in such libraries

Efforts are on to develop an interface for the thesuarus developed by The Social Science Information Centre (IZ), Bonn and German Social Science Infrastructure Services (GESIS) and to integrate it with the data entry module of OII

 Who can provide data:

Any, Library and Information Cente in India can contribute data voluntarily. Those interested may please contact the OII coordinator, at IGIDR, Mumbai

The data thus provided and compiled becomes `Common Property' and therefore, it is implicit that access is open, but no one owns it. The data contributed by libraries will be made avilable to all the other participating libraries for mirroring.

Due credit will be given to the contributors, whether institutions or an individuals, by including their names in each record contributed by them, which ultimately gets displayed at the time of retrieval.

OII Model:

The OII model, developed on the basis of Participatory Approach, allows the institutions/individuals to:

  1. Contribute Data online from their workstations.
  2. Offer suggestions to improve the system.
  3. Monitor and evaluate the results themselves.
  4. Mirror the compilation at their sites for non-commercial purpose.

Main features of the OII model :

  1. Data comes from individuals and institutions.
  2. Abstract will be provided where ever possible
  3. Covers book reviews and Conference papers published in such journals. Also, covers thesis, dissertations, working Papers eminating from such institutions
  4. Survyes literature available in participating libraries and provides online search interface for identifying resouces available in such libraries
  5. Data, on demand, will be provided as flat files to all the contributing institutions, with all the metadata elements, for mirroring for non-commercial purpose
  6. Each contributor would get due credit and the users of the database can directly Interact with them
